Family  goals

Hey family! It's a new year, so you know what that means... time for new year resolutions and goals. We aren't talking about the same old goals that you never start or follow through with. It's time to make REAL and ATTAINABLE goals for both you and the family. Here are some tips that we follow when setting and reaching goals:

  1. Make "Smart goals"

  • Set yourself up for success by making "SMART goals.

  • S- Specific (What do you want to achieve? The more specific you are, the clearer your steps can be to reach your goal.)

  • M-Measurable (How will you track your progress? Tracking your progress can help you see what needs to be done, how far you have come, and when you actually reach your goal)

  • A - Achievable (How will you achieve your goal? Make a plan with action steps and resources needed to accomplish your goals)

  • R - Relevant (How will this goal help you?  Make sure this goal will help you, your family, or situation and it is something you WANT to work on and achieve)

  • T - Timely (When will you achieve this goal? Knowing how much time you need to accomplish your goal will help you make an effective action plan to reach the goal)

  2.  know your family members goals (and keep them accountable)

  • Every January we sit down as a family and make new goals for the year. When we do this, it allows for everyone to know each other's goals and help keep everyone accountable throughout the year. I take pictures of the kids' goal lists and check in with them individually and collectively. Doing this makes their goals easily accessible (so conversations can happen anywhere and anytime), shows them I am interested in their progress, and helps me remember their goals along with everything else I have to remember (mom brain).

 3.  Celebrate your accomplishments

  • When you accomplish your goals, MAKE IT A BIG DEAL! I'm not saying book a Disney resort stay for every goal you reach, however, make it a habit to celebrate your wins, no matter how small they are. That can be as simple as verbal recognition, an ice cream family night, or a small shopping spree for the lucky "goal crusher". Just make reaching your goals fun so that you feel accomplished and hopefully want to reach more goals.
